Information on the talks held between Georgia and the European in Brussels


On 24-25 August 2009, in Brussels, next round of talks was held between Georgia and the European Union concerning the conclusion of agreements on visa simplification and readmission issues. As a result of constructive work, the texts of the agreements were agreed and the Georgian side's priority issues included.

Based on the reports from the European Union, the agreed texts between the sides requires a final approval by the EU member states before the aforesaid agreements are signed. Accordingly, immediately after the receipt of the approval by the member states, the sides will start procedures under their respective laws necessary for the signing of the aforesaid agreements. The signing is scheduled to take place until the end of 2009.

In the Doing Business 2010 Ranking Georgia holds 11th place in the world.



According to the Doing Business 2010 Georgia has made a progress and moved forward by five steps to the 11th place with regard to the ease of doing business. The above mentioned can be regarded as a declaration of confidence towards Georgia, which significantly increases the perspectives of attraction of investments in Georgia.

In the given ranking Russia is holding 120th place.

Notwithstanding the last year's Russian aggression and world financial crisis, Georgia successfully continues implementation of economic and democratic reforms, which is observed by international society and given positive appraisal.

Informal Meeting with the New Group of Friends of Georgia

On 15 March 2009, in Brussels, under the initiative of the Swedish side, a meeting of the New Group of Georgia's Friends was held at the level of Ministers. The meeting was attended by Foreign Ministers of Sweden, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Bulgaria, Romania, representatives of Turkey, United States, Slovakia, United Kingdom, Denmark, Poland, Czech Republic as well as the EU Special Representative for South Caucasus and the EU Special Representative on the Crises in Georgia. Minister of Foreign Affairs Grigol Vashadze led the Georgian delegation.

The aim of the meeting was to discuss the priority issues of Georgia's integration into the European Union and NATO and to outline further steps. A working dinner held in the framework of this meeting focused on the discussion of the situation resulting from Russia's aggression against Georgia in August 2008, issues of de-occultation of Georgia's occupied territories and, in this context, the functioning of effective international peacekeeping mission.

In the light of Georgia-EU relations, discussions centred on such priority issues as introduction of simplified visa regime with the European Union; possibility of creating a comprehensive free trade zone with the European Union; prospects for concluding a European Union Association Agreement; implementation of Georgia-European Union Action Plan within the European Neighbourhood Policy; Eastern Partnership Initiative, etc.

Talking points with respect to the development of Georgia-NATO relations included, among others, issues of the functioning of the NATO-Georgia Commission and Georgia's annual action plan on NATO, NATO anniversary summit scheduled for April 2009; Georgia's involvement in the international operations of NATO; NATO Trust Fund projects and the strengthening of NATO Liaison Office in Georgia.
